Steppin’ Pretty

1936

Full score and parts/Full score only

“Steppin’ Pretty” was recorded by Andy Kirk and His Twelve Clouds of Joy for Decca on March 4, 1936, in New York City. It was composed by Mary Lou Williams specifically for this session and dedicated to Mamie Floyd, one of Williams’ sisters. It is a perfect illustration of her simple yet elegant, straight-forward Kansas City-style swing.

This edition is presenting the piece reconstructed as originally written by Williams, from her manuscripts. The band made several changes in the studio, detailed here as appendix.
